Where to place a Wi-Fi extender: the complete guide
Everything that decides whether an extender fixes your dead zone or just adds a second slow network — plus every guide we have written, organized by the question you are actually asking.
An extender does one job: it hears your router, then repeats that signal somewhere the router can't reach on its own. Everything about whether it works comes down to where you plug it in — because it has to be close enough to the router to hear a clean signal, and far enough toward the dead zone to be useful. Get that balance wrong and you have spent money to create a second, slower network in a place you never sit.

The 60-second version
- Halfway in signal, not halfway in distance. The extender should sit where your phone still reports roughly -60 to -67 dBm from the router. That is usually much closer to the router than people expect.
- Count walls, not feet. One brick wall can cost more signal than 30 feet of open hallway. A straight line through two doorways beats a short diagonal through three walls.
- Height and openness beat symmetry. Waist height or above, out in the room, away from metal, mirrors, aquariums, boilers and fridges.
- An extender halves throughput on a shared radio. If the dead zone needs real speed — 4K, big uploads, gaming — plan for wired backhaul or mesh with a dedicated backhaul radio instead.
- Test before you buy. The cheapest way to compare three candidate outlets is to simulate them. That is what Range Up does.
:::tip If the extender's own link to the router is weaker than about -70 dBm, move the extender toward the router, not toward the dead room. A repeater cannot amplify what it cannot hear cleanly. :::
