Starting From a Template: The Fastest Way to Map Your Home
Skip the blank grid. Start from a Wi-Fi floor plan template, fix the three things that move the answer, and get a coverage map you can act on in two minutes.
Most people who give up on mapping their Wi-Fi give up at the same moment: the empty grid. Drawing your own plan is not hard, but it asks you to think about your house before you have any reason to believe the exercise will pay off.
A starter layout removes that. You pick the plan that looks most like your home, change three things, and read a coverage map. Two minutes, no measuring, no drawing.
What you get when you load one#
From the home screen, New plan offers two routes. Blank plan lets you set a grid size and draw the layout yourself. Starter layouts opens a browsable list of pre-built plans, each with a thumbnail of the actual walls, a one-line description, and a meta line showing the grid size and floor count. Tap Use layout and it opens in the editor with the walls already in place.

Everything is editable the moment it loads. A template is a starting geometry, not a commitment.
Pick by circulation, not by room count#
The simulation does not care how many bedrooms you have. It cares about two things: how many walls sit on the straight line between the router and the room that fails, and whether there is a corridor or a stairwell the signal can travel down instead of through.
So choose the layout whose hallway and stair positions look like yours, even when the room labels are wrong. A two-bedroom apartment with a central corridor is better modeled by the Long Hallway layout than by the 2-Bedroom card. A house whose stairwell sits in the middle is better modeled by the Townhouse than by the Two-Story if your floors are stacked tightly around the stairs.
If two layouts look equally close, take the one where the router ends up with the same number of walls between it and your problem room. That single count drives more of the result than anything else on the screen.
When a template beats drawing, and when it does not#

The honest summary: a template is an excellent first pass and a poor final answer if your construction is unusual. It gets you to a decision about whether to keep going. When the decision gets narrow — this outlet or that one, a second node or not — draw the plan properly, which still only takes a few minutes.
The three edits that actually change the answer#
Once the layout is loaded, resist the urge to tidy it. Three edits carry almost all the accuracy.
- Put the router where it really is. Not centered, not where you wish it were. In the closet by the front door, on the floor behind the TV, on the shelf in the utility room — the truth. This one edit moves the result more than every other change combined.
- Set the material preset for the build. Trace the straight line from the router to the room that fails and look at what it crosses; then pick the preset — Wood frame, Brick or Concrete — that matches those two or three walls, and nudge the Wall loss value if they are heavier than the preset assumes. A drywall stud partition costs about 3 to 6 dB at 5 GHz, and 5 to 8 dB once wiring and plumbing run through it; brick or block costs 10 to 16 dB; a concrete floor can cost 15 to 25 dB. - Fix the doorway that is not there. If the template shows an opening where you have a solid wall, close it, and open one where you actually have a door. A doorway costs a small fraction of the wall around it, so an invented opening invents coverage you do not have.
The two-minute run#
- New plan, then Starter layouts, then Browse layouts. Around ten seconds.
- Choose by corridor and stair position and tap Use layout. Fifteen seconds.
- Tap the canvas where your router actually sits. Ten seconds.
- Set the material preset to match the walls between the router and your problem room. Forty seconds, and this is the part worth slowing down for.
- Mark the target location by tapping the spot in the room that made you search — the desk, the bed, the couch. Ten seconds.
- Read the baseline heatmap. Which rooms sit below -67 dBm, and is your problem room merely marginal or genuinely dead? The color bands are explained in how to read the heatmap.
- Add the suggested extender spot, or a candidate of your own, and open the results. The before-and-after comparison tells you how many dB that room would gain.
Under two minutes and you have a decision rather than a drawing.
Where a template will mislead you#
Three failure modes, all fixable once you know them.
Proportions. Starter layouts load on a fixed grid, and the model treats one cell as roughly a meter. If your home is much longer or shorter than the template, shift the interior walls rather than accepting the default spacing. The good news is that distance is the forgiving variable: signal drops about 6 dB every time the distance doubles across open space, so being somewhat off on a room's depth costs well under a decibel. Being off by one wall costs three to sixteen.
Construction. The walls arrive as generic partitions. If you live in brick, block, poured concrete, or lath and plaster with metal mesh, an untouched template is optimistic by a wide margin — and optimistic in the one direction that makes you buy the wrong thing.
Missing objects. No template knows about your masonry chimney, the mirrored closet doors in the hallway, the foil-backed insulation in the attic conversion, or the steel beam over the kitchen opening. Each of those can cost more than a wall. Add them as walls on the path if they sit between the router and the room.
Turning two minutes into a decision#
The point of a fast map is not the map. It is the two answers that follow from it.
If the baseline shows your problem room a band or two short — say -70 dBm where you wanted better than -67 — that is a placement problem, and it may not need hardware at all. Try moving the router on the plan first, since dragging it costs nothing and often recovers 10 dB.
If the baseline shows the room 20 dB short with nothing better than orange anywhere on the path to it, no outlet in that house holds an extender that will help, and you have learned that for free in the time it takes to make coffee.
Either way, save the plan. When you later want the accurate version — the real dimensions, the real chimney, the real construction — you are editing something rather than facing an empty grid again. Is there a Wi-Fi floor plan template I can use instead of drawing my own?
Yes. Do I need accurate room dimensions for the simulation to work?
Not to a foot. Across open space, signal falls about 6 dB each time the distance doubles, so a room that is a little too deep or too shallow shifts the result by well under a decibel. A single misidentified wall shifts it by 3 to 16 dB, which is why wall materials and wall positions matter far more than exact measurements.
Can I edit a starter layout after I load it?
Yes. The template opens in the editor with the walls already drawn, and every wall, door, floor and device position stays editable, with the material preset and the loss values in Planner Settings. Most people change only the router position and the material preset, then run the placement search.
Is a template accurate enough to decide whether to buy an extender?
It is accurate enough for the big decision — whether the problem is fixable from an outlet at all — provided the material preset matches what the walls on the path from the router to the failing room are really made of. For fine choices between two nearby outlets, draw the plan properly instead. A template that still shows the room 20 dB short is telling you something no amount of extra detail will reverse.
Does using a template require access to my Wi-Fi network?
No. Loading a layout and running the coverage calculation happen entirely on the phone, with no network access involved — nothing scans for SSIDs, nothing samples your live signal, nothing runs a speed test. The map is arithmetic over the walls in the template, the material settings you choose and the spot you mark for the router, which is why it can rate a room you have never sat in.
