Renter-Friendly Wi-Fi Fixes: No Drilling, No Cable Runs
You cannot drill, rewire or move the jack. Here are the renter wifi fixes that still work, ranked by how much signal each one buys and what it leaves behind.
Most Wi-Fi advice quietly assumes you own the walls. Run a cable to the back bedroom. Put an access point in the ceiling. Move the coax outlet. None of that is available when the lease says no holes, no alterations, and everything back as you found it.
The good news: the two changes with the biggest payoff — where the router sits, and where a second radio sits — are both reversible. Here is what each one is worth.
What renting actually rules out#
Be clear about the boundary before you plan around it. Off the table in almost every tenancy: drilling through walls or joists, running cable inside a wall or under floorboards, adding a new coax or Ethernet jack, mounting anything on the outside of the building, and relocating the fiber ONT or cable entry point.
Still on the table: everything that plugs in, sits on a shelf, tucks under a rug, or peels off cleanly. That is a bigger toolkit than it sounds, and it covers the majority of dead-zone cases in apartments, where the problem is usually walls and neighbors rather than distance.
Start with the tether: how far the router can move#
Your router is not bolted to the wall. It is tied to one jack by one cable, and that cable can usually be longer without anyone touching the building. This is the single highest-value change available to a renter, and it costs the price of a longer cable.
- Fiber (ONT on the wall). The ONT stays. The router does not. Run a flat Ethernet patch cable from the ONT to wherever the plan says the router belongs. Ethernet is good to about 328 feet (100 m) with no loss worth discussing, so the length is not your constraint — the route is.
- Cable / coax modem. Swap the short jumper for a longer RG6 cable and move the modem and router together. Coax loss over household lengths is small; avoid adding splitters, which cost far more than the extra cable does.
- DSL / VDSL. Do not extend the phone line. DSL sync rate degrades with line length and with every extra joint. Leave the modem at the jack and extend Ethernet from the modem to the router instead, or put the modem in bridge mode and place the router where you want it.
A move of 15 to 20 feet, out of a hallway closet and onto a shelf in the main living space, is routinely worth 5 to 10 dB in the far half of a home — more than most extenders buy you, for less money. Work down this list before you spend anything. The dB figures are typical ranges, not promises — how much you actually gain depends on your walls and your starting point.

Furniture in the signal path#
In a furnished rental the big pieces are not yours to move, but they still sit in the signal path, and a few are worth as much as a wall. Metal filing cabinets, refrigerators, water heaters, full-height mirrors and fish tanks all absorb or reflect Wi-Fi hard — a mirror between the router and the bedroom can cost more than the drywall behind it. Bookcases, couches and mattresses are milder, a decibel or two each, but three in a row on one path add up.
You usually cannot rearrange the landlord's furniture, but you can move the router a few feet so the line to the room you care about misses the worst offender — starting with getting it out from behind the television. Plug-in extenders: the renter's default tool#
An extender needs one thing renting can always provide: an outlet. Nothing is mounted, nothing is drilled, and it comes with you when you move.
The one rule that decides whether it works is where you plug it in. An extender repeats what it hears, so it has to be placed where the router still arrives cleanly — roughly the -60 to -67 dBm window — not next to the dead room where it will rebroadcast a weak signal at full strength. Two renter-specific notes. Outlet height matters more than usual in furnished rentals, where the free outlets tend to sit behind a couch or under a desk; a short extension cord that raises the unit to shelf height is a legitimate fix, not a compromise. And if the only usable outlet is already past the wall you were trying to get through, no amount of shuffling it will help.
When the walls win: powerline and a surface-run wire#
Powerline adapters send data over the electrical wiring, which lets you reach a room that radio cannot get to without touching a single wall. In an apartment with a masonry core, that is sometimes the only option that works.
It is also the least predictable thing in this article. Real throughput depends on the age of the wiring, how many junctions the signal crosses, and whether both outlets are on the same circuit and the same breaker leg. Two adapters on the same circuit in a modern building can be genuinely fast; the same pair crossing the breaker panel in an older one can collapse to a fraction of that or fail to link at all. Plugged into a surge-protected strip, they often refuse to work entirely — use a wall outlet directly.

The strongest renter setup, when it works, is a hybrid: powerline or a surface-run Ethernet cable carrying the connection to the far room, with a cheap access point there doing the radio. That gives you a full-speed second radio without the throughput penalty a single-radio repeater pays.
What to ask your landlord for#
Two requests are worth making, because they are cheap for the landlord and transformative for you.
- Permission for a surface-run cable in a cord raceway. Self-adhesive or clipped raceway along a baseboard peels off cleanly and leaves no holes. This gets you a wired access point in the problem room, which outperforms every wireless option.
- Permission to relocate the router within the property. If the ISP box is in a locked closet or a shared utility room, ask whether it can be moved or whether you may extend from it.
Not worth asking for, usually: a new outlet, a hole through a wall, or anything mounted outdoors. If your apartment genuinely cannot be covered without those, admit it early — a third extender bought to work around a concrete core is money you will not get back.
Plan it before anything moves#
Every option above involves a position, and positions are exactly what you can test for free on a floor plan.

- Mark the router where it sits today and read the baseline coverage map.
- Move the router to each spot your tether could actually reach and compare the maps. If one of them fixes the problem room, stop here; you are done for the price of a cable.
