Where to Put Your Router: The Placement Rules That Actually Matter
Router placement moves every room at once. Central and high, clear of metal and water, antenna angles for multi-floor homes, and fixes when the cable jack traps you.
Most people install the router where the cable comes out of the wall, then spend money trying to undo that decision. Router position is the single largest lever you have over home coverage, it is free to pull, and it changes every room at once instead of one.
These are the rules that are worth following, the numbers behind them, and the honest options for when the wiring will not let you obey them.
Why moving the router beats buying anything#
An extender improves one region of your home. Moving the router changes the whole map. In a typical house, relocating a router out of a corner and into the middle of the floor plan is worth roughly 6 to 15 dB in the far rooms — often the difference between a room that streams and a room that stalls.
There is a geometry reason for that. A router in the corner of your footprint radiates most of its energy through two exterior walls into the yard and the street. A large share of what it transmits never lands anywhere useful. Move it toward the middle and that same energy is aimed at rooms with people in them.
Rule 1: central to the rooms you use, not to the floor plan#
The "put it in the center of the house" advice is close but slightly wrong. The geometric center of your floor plan is not necessarily where your demand is. Nobody streams 4K in the utility room.
What you want is the center of usage, pulled toward the heavy users. Here is how to find it in ten minutes:
- Sketch the floor plan — one page, rough proportions, every floor.
- Mark every place someone actually uses Wi-Fi: desks, the sofa, beds, the TV, the smart speaker, the thermostat.
- Weight them. A home office and a TV need real throughput. A doorbell camera and a thermostat do not. Circle the two or three spots that must not fail.
- Find the point that minimizes walls to the circled spots — not the point that minimizes feet. A path through three open doorways beats a shorter path through two masonry walls; the loss per building material explains why.
- List the surfaces near that point where a router could physically live and reach power.
- Pick the highest, most open one of those surfaces.
In a two-story home, "central" includes the vertical axis. A router on the ground floor of a two-story house serves the upstairs through the floor; on a mid-level shelf near the stairwell it serves both floors through the open stair. The staircase is the most transparent path between your floors — use it.

Rule 2: high and in the open, away from metal and water#
Get the router 4 to 6 feet off the floor, clear of furniture. Floor level is the worst layer in any room: it is full of legs, sofas, appliances and cables, and it typically costs a few dB compared to shelf height for no benefit at all.
"In the open" means visible from most of the room. A router inside a media cabinet, behind a TV, or in a drawer is being asked to transmit through a box.
Then keep it away from these:

The dB cost of each of these varies far too much to promise a single figure, but the direction is reliable: metal reflects, water absorbs, and both are worse than the drywall you were worried about.
Rule 3: point the antennas properly#
An external antenna does not fire out of its tip. It radiates in a donut shape around itself — strongest out to the sides, weakest along the axis it points. This has one immediate consequence:
- Antennas vertical puts the strongest signal out sideways, across the floor you are standing on. This is the right default for a single-story home or an apartment.
- Antennas horizontal tips that donut so it spreads up and down instead. This is what you want if the problem room is directly above or below the router.
For a multi-floor home with two or more antennas, split the difference: one vertical, one horizontal, or one vertical and one at 45 degrees. You give up a little same-floor reach for a real gain on the floor above.
If your router has internal antennas, orientation still matters — it is just the whole box you are aiming. A router designed to stand upright should stand upright; a flat, puck-shaped unit should sit flat. Laying an upright router on its side rotates its pattern in a way its designers never intended.
Change one antenna at a time and re-check the same spot afterward. Angles are worth a few dB, not twenty — if tilting an antenna appears to rescue a dead room on its own, the room was marginal already and something else moved with it.
The worst spot in the house: the closet by the front door#
This is where a huge number of routers live, and it fails for four reasons at once:
- It is a corner. The front door is on the perimeter, so half the coverage is already outside the building.
- It is enclosed. Structured media panels are metal boxes. A closed metal enclosure can take 20 to 30 dB out of the signal — the equivalent of adding a masonry wall or two to every path in the house.
- There is a solid door in front of it. Interior doors cost a few dB each, and you close this one because the closet is ugly.
- Nobody uses Wi-Fi there. Your strongest coverage is aimed at a coat rack.
The runner-up worst spot is the media cabinet under the TV: enclosed, low, surrounded by metal chassis, and usually against an exterior wall. If your smart TV buffers and the router is six feet away inside that cabinet, the distance is not the problem.
If the router must stay in a closet, at minimum take the door off the enclosure, lift the unit onto the top shelf, and pull the antennas out past the frame. That is a partial rescue, not a fix.
When the coax or fiber entry traps you#
Often the router is in a bad place because that is where the service enters the building. The important realization: the modem or ONT has to stay at the entry point. The Wi-Fi does not. Ranked from best to last resort:
- Run Ethernet from the entry point to a central spot and put the router there. Cat5e or Cat6 works to 328 feet, so length is never the constraint in a house. Flat cable along a baseboard or under a rug is enough for most homes and is reversible.
- Split the gateway. If your ISP box is a combined modem and router, put it in bridge or access-point mode and run your own router where it belongs. Ask the ISP for the bridge mode instructions — this is a supported configuration on most services.
- Reuse the coax you already have. If there is a cable jack in a better room, MoCA adapters or a single Ethernet run can carry the network there over the existing wiring, and one wired access point in a good spot beats several wireless repeaters. Powerline is the same idea over your electrical circuits, with more variable results.
- Ask the ISP to move the entry point or activate a different jack. For coax this is often cheap or free. For fiber it means moving the ONT, which usually requires a technician visit but is not exotic.
- Accept the position and place a second device deliberately. If nothing above is possible — and if you rent, several of them may not be — this is when an extender or mesh node genuinely earns its place. Testing a new spot before you commit#
Every rule above is a generalization about houses, and you live in a specific one. Before you drill anything, it is worth checking what the move actually buys you — either by mapping coverage from both positions with a phone, or by simulating them.

Where is the best place to put a Wi-Fi router?
As close as you can get to the center of the rooms you actually use, 4 to 6 feet off the floor, out in the open, and away from large metal objects, water and mirrors. In a multi-story home, a mid-level position near the stairwell is usually better than a perfect ground-floor center, because the stairs are the clearest vertical path between floors.
Does putting the router in a closet or cabinet really matter?
Yes, and it is one of the biggest self-inflicted losses in home Wi-Fi. A metal structured wiring enclosure can cost 20 to 30 dB, like any other sheet of metal in the path, and even a wooden cabinet with a closed door takes a real bite out of every path in the house. If the router has to live in a closet, put it on the top shelf with the door open and the antennas clear of the frame.
Should router antennas be vertical or horizontal?
Vertical for single-floor coverage, because a vertical antenna spreads its strongest signal sideways across the floor. If your problem room is directly above or below the router, angle one antenna horizontally or to 45 degrees so some energy is aimed up and down. With two or more antennas, one vertical and one horizontal is a reasonable multi-floor compromise.
Can I move my router away from the cable outlet?
Yes. The modem or ONT must stay where the service enters, but the router does not have to sit next to it. Run an Ethernet cable from the modem to a better location — Cat5e and Cat6 work up to 328 feet — or use MoCA over existing coax, and put the Wi-Fi where the people are.
Does the router need to be upstairs or downstairs in a two-story house?
If you can only choose a floor, choose the one with more Wi-Fi use, and place the router near the stairwell so the open stair acts as the path between floors. A router in the middle of the ground floor typically serves an upstairs room better than a router at the far end of the upper floor serves the ground floor, because the ceiling loss applies either way but the horizontal distance does not.
How much difference does router placement actually make?
